So there I was - 11pm on a snowy Monday night, exiting the Kinkos in Brooklyn trying to get back to the apartment in Brooklyn Heights. According to my useless iPhone map I was less than a half mile away and I decided to walk it. I get really stubborn when it comes to taking cabs and making life too easy so I braved the cold, steadied my kinkos bag, and made my way home. Except I kept getting lost. I must have looked like a lost, poor tourist because a man in a hooded jacket came up and asked me if I needed help. In his words "one more block the way you are goin' and you headed for trouble girl!" He pointed to a car I had noticed honking every 2 minutes on the corner and said "why don't you just get in a cab." I protested that cabs are yellow and black and this was an unmarked town car but by then I was too tired and frustrated to care. I climbed in the back seat and my russian immigrant driver had no idea where my apartment was even though it was within one square mile. He asked to use my phone and drove around for 20 minutes until I finally noticed a store that I walk by everyday and we made it. There was no meter in the "cab" so I asked him how much I owed him. His response was to look behind the seat and stare right at my chestal area and with a head nod said "show me what you want and it will be free." I asked him to repeat what he had said because at first I didn't believe what an obvious perv he was. He repeated the slimy request and I threw a $5 dollar bill at him and said "you are disgusting, goodnight". You would think the jerk would just take off. Instead he demanded that I give him 4 more dollars, saying that $5 wasn't enough.
It was only after exiting the cab that I remembered the movie Taken and how you should never get in unmarked cars with strange men on a deserted Brooklyn street at 11pm on a Monday night. Oh the stupid things I do in NYC.
Scary! Babe, I'm glad you're ok. Do you live there now? If so I need to make up some excuse to come see you because I love New York City soo much!
ReplyDeleteYes, that is very sketchy and I wouldn't do it again if I were you. I'm glad you are safe. On the bright side, not everyone knows how much a flash of their chest costs. :) Coming from Europe, I'd say $9 is not bad.
